Natural Tinnitus Cures: Some Simple and Easy-to-Do Tips

Tinnitus, or ringing in the ears, may not sound like a serious affliction, but many people with the condition know otherwise. In the United States alone, about 12 million people seek medical treatment for tinnitus because the condition interferes with their day-to-day activities, their work and their sleep. It is true that there are mild, tolerable and intermittent forms of tinnitus, but there are instances when the ringing in the ears can be so disturbing as to actually cause pain. Many sufferers of tinnitus concur that, at best, it is uncomfortable and distracting from routine activities.

To obtain relief from the incessant roaring, buzzing or ringing sound of tinnitus, many people consult an otolaryngologist (an ear, nose and throat specialist). This doctor then tries to determine the cause of the condition. Often, he finds out that tinnitus is a byproduct of some hearing problem such as sensory hearing loss, ear infection, or injury to the structures inside the ears. It is also not uncommon for tinnitus to be caused by something as innocuous as earwax buildup. When this is the case, it is easy to treat the condition. Simply remove the excess earwax and the tinnitus will disappear.

Tinnitus can also occur as one of the symptoms of a disease. When the disease is then properly diagnosed and treated, the ringing in the ears will naturally go away. Some of the diseases that have tinnitus as a symptom are Meniere’s disease, thyroid disease, hypertension, acoustic neuroma, anemia, carotid atherosclerosis, AV malformations, temporomandibular (TM) diseases, labyrinthitis and otosclerosis.

Aging can also be the cause of tinnitus. For many elderly people, tinnitus comes with hearing loss, visual impairment and the general decline in physical faculties associated with the late adult and geriatric years.

Regardless of the actual cause of the ringing in the ears, it is possible to obtain relief safely and effectively with the use of natural tinnitus cures. Below are some of these natural cures and tips to reduce tinnitus:

  • Avoid being exposed to loud sounds. Loud headphone music is a common cause of tinnitus. Reduce headphone volume to a level that allows conversations or sounds around you to be heard clearly. When working in places where there are loud sounds (such as in factories with loud machinery, racetracks and airports), use ear plugs or ear muffles.
  • Reduce the amount of salt and sugar in your diet. These two impair circulation, and poor circulation can cause and aggravate tinnitus.
  • Avoid stimulants such as coffee, tea and sodas.
  • Watch out for hypertension and/or being overweight. Either one makes a person vulnerable to tinnitus. If present, hypertension must be controlled by following the doctor’s recommendations on how to do so. If overweight, lose the excess pounds through sensible diet and exercise.
  • Stop smoking. This will relieve the tinnitus and make you healthier overall.
  • Get sufficient sleep and rest. Avoid fatigue.
  • As much as possible, learn to ignore the ringing or roaring sound of tinnitus. Treat it as an inconvenience or distraction that, with training, can be ignored and relegated to the back of the mind.  Do not worry too much about it.

Be aware that some medicines such as aspirin and antibiotics can cause tinnitus. If not necessary, do not take these. Or ask your doctor if it is possible to use other drugs that do not have tinnitus as a side effect.
